La historia se desarrolla en Hawai y sigue el imprevisible viaje que emprende una familia norteamericana en un momento crítico. Matt King (George Clooney), casado y padre de dos niñas, se ve obligado a reconsiderar su pasado y a encauzar su futuro cuando su mujer sufre un terrible accidente de barco en Waikiki. Matt intenta torpemente recomponer la relación con sus hijas –la precoz Scottie, de 10 años (Amara Miller), y la rebelde Alexandra, de 17 (Shailene Woodley)–, al mismo tiempo que se enfrenta a la difícil decisión de vender las tierras de la familia. Herencia de la unión entre la realeza hawaiana y los misioneros, los King poseen algunas de las últimas zonas vírgenes de playa tropical de las islas, de un valor incalculable.Cuando Alexandra suelta la bomba de que su madre tenía una aventura amorosa en el momento del accidente, Matt tiene que empezar a mirar con ojos nuevos toda su vida, por no hablar de su herencia, durante una semana plena de cruciales decisiones. Con sus hijas a cuestas, Matt se embarca en la azarosa búsqueda del amante de su mujer. A lo largo del camino, donde se van alternando encuentros divertidos, conflictivos y trascendentales, Matt comprende que por fin se halla en la buena dirección para reconstruir su vida y su familia.
